It was only a few years ago when I heard the term Spagyrics. It was used by one of my herbology teachers. He spoke about it in terms of a magical alchemical connection which we - as herbalists and alchemists- can harvest when we make medicine. Mind blow. I was in. Let me share with you, How I come to understand what exactly 'Spagyrics' are I love astrology, but not the pop astrology we see buzzing around. I mean the true astrology which is from the time when astronomy and astrology were connected. When Magic was understood (mostly) and used to create, comprehend, and to journey with life and its mysteries. This included Astrology, different forms of divination, sound healing and many therapies which we see a revival of in the holistic health space now, such as Acupuncture, Reiki and Reflexology. Through my herbalist path, I have come to understand the wider language of plants, so I am able to understand their Signatures (Sign in Nature) and influence on the mind, body and spirit. Through this language learning , I have been able to comprehend the energetics of the planets and the language they breathe into the natural world. sounds a bit woo woo right? Well yes- and No! Yes- because magic and the mysteries of life and nature aren't understood by the mind- so those who are rigid in logic, can't comprehend this language. The true magic and mysteries however ARE comprehended through the heart. This is the true etemylogical meaning of "learning by heart" it's why it cant be written about, or expressed through the mind- it has to be felt, and understood from a place of clear coherence with the natural self. We can't begin to understand this language of nature from the mind. We have to feel, sense and experience it, engaging all of our senses- to understand the world around us. So... No, this isn't as woo woo as you were probably thinking...
its just a different perspective on what you've known, which you may or may not be ready to comprehend.
Lets go back to the word Signature.
its thrown around a lot in the herbal world, and rightly so... but we have to first understand that Signature = Sign in Nature
So lets pick a plant and start to understand its Signs. Red Clover (Trifolium pratense) , a common British wild meadow flower. If you are in the UK and have a patch of grass then you've probably got red clover in there somewhere.
as you can see in the picture, it has nodular flowers with lots of tiny long petals- all curling in to create a little ball shape. As an herbalist I know that this little beauty is a spring tonic and has an affinity for the lymphatic system and the female reproductive system.
In particular- it is know to have a strong resonance with the lymph nodes, as well as the vulva, part of the Female reporductive system. The shape of the flower and the petals both indicate this. The nodular shape for the nodes and the petals are exactly in the anatomical shape of the vulva.
This is the point where I think it becomes magical, the nature around us shows us what it is!
There are plants in the amazon which carry the same mark as a poison snake bite- which are the exact and only antidote for that particular snake bite. The Sting we get from nettles- causing that heat and inflamation to our skin- is exactly what it does within the body- stimulates blood flow and dispurses heat.
So what about the Astrological Signs? and what are spagyrics?!
I'm getting there :-D I'm taking it that, becuase you are here, you have, at least a basic understanding of astrology, so ill just dive in. Lets take Nettles (Urtica dioica) again, they are spikey and have a strong defence mechanism, they cause heat and inflamation, they are the best blood tonic and are used to replenish the blood after blood loss and have even allowed people to live without dialysis treatment! They are full of iron. What Planet do you think they are expressing a ressonance from?
MARS!... right. The Plants and Planets are interconnected through, what the wonderful mind, Rupert Sheldrake, calls 'Morphic Ressonance'.
A very very basic description of what Sheldrake describes as Morphic Resonance is that it is the memory of nature, and how every species has a collective memory which it draws upon, and adds too. It is the influence of like though like through space and time, using morphic fields, Morphic Fields carry the morphic resonance.
It is the basis of self organising systems, which underlie the activity of nature.
So... THIS is what is believed to be the energy which creates the Seasons and cylces, which we see around us, and within us,.. Within the very blueprint of life. The connection between the celestial realms.
This morphic resonance is what organises energy and nature, throughout the cosmos.
Planets carry a certain resonance which influences those in its field. And Plants, as they are part of nature, pick up this resonance, which, in turn, helps it to self organise, and reflect this resonance outwardly. Just like us. In plants we see this through their shape, size, colour, structure, taste, smell and the environment were they thrive.
so Ultimately...A plant is connected to a planet, through this morphic field. They share memory and energy, which affects the way the plant grows, and in turn, the way it resonates with us and our nature, both when we are around them and within a herbal medicine setting.
When we understand the language of the plants and planets, like our magnificent ancesters used to, we begin to comprehend the celestail influences on our energy and physicality, and can work with specific plant medicines which resonate at this vibration or more fittingly- who share the 'resonance' to be able to heal and transform us. This is the Essence of Spagyrics!
in my next post ill be discussing How Spagryics are created and what this does within us, when we take them as medicine. to make sure not to miss it, you can subscribe to my mailing list where I share these posts, and rarely anything else, maybe the odd discount / sale promotion!
I'd love to hear your thoughts on this and welcome you get comment or get in touch.
Love and blessings
